1. Tell me about yourself and your business.
I’m Karin Nelson and I am a certified Life and Money Mindset Coach. I work with other mommas and help them transform their relationship with themselves and with their money to live their best life. I am a mom of two teenage gingers. They are amazing and we have so much fun together. I own four cats and find hilarity in their daily hijinks. I live in Davis County and love living in between Salt Lake City and Ogden – close enough to enjoy both cities and everything in between. I can be found out for a jog on most mornings, even in the winter and I really enjoy living on the mountain bench.
2. What inspired you to start your business?
After my divorce a few years ago I went through a period in my life where I felt like I had lost my identity. I didn’t know who I was, my confidence was shot, and I quickly realized that I had a terrible relationship with money. I went back to my first love of self help and began reading everything I could find on how to gain confidence, how to love yourself, mindset, money relationships, thought work and anything else I could find.
I began to build a relationship with myself. I figured out what made me unique. I learned who I was and what I wanted out of life. I began to practice self love and self care, realizing that if I would fill me up first it was infinitely easier to love and take care of my kids showing up as the parent that I wanted to be.
I also created a strong relationship with money. I began to love my money and opened myself up to abundance. As my relationship with myself and with my money transformed, I recognized my passion for life transformation. I knew I couldn’t be the only mom out there who felt invisible. I knew there were other mommas who wanted to stop worrying constantly about if they were a good enough parent, or if they would have enough money at the end of the month. I was positive there were other women who wanted to feel love for themselves again. I became a life coach to help as many women as possible be who they were meant to be.
3. Talk about challenges in your business and how you overcame them.
The challenge that I face in my business is getting out of my own way. I am, like many others, someone who likes comfort – but unfortunately being comfortable is not the best way to build a business. I have had to constantly be stepping outside my comfort zone in terms of learning technical things like building a website, going to meetups talking with new people, pushing myself to speak and teach publicly. There have been many times when I have wanted to say no to something, but I know when I do, I’m standing in my own way. There have been times when I have completely messed up and failed miserably. But I have been resilient in picking myself up and giving myself permission to step right back out of that comfort zone again and again.
4. What accomplishments have you experienced since starting your business?
Since becoming a life coach I have realized that I am an engaging person. I like teaching and I am good at it. I love to be in front of the group teaching and speaking. I have held my own sold out workshop. I have held confidence trainings for several non-profits and major companies Salt Lake City. My ability to think outside the box and take action to make things happen continues to help me grow my coaching so I can help as many mommas as possible. My coaching business is small right now but I have set a goal to help at least 100 women this year and I am determined and excited to do all I can to make that happen.
5. What would you tell others who want to start a business and don't know where to start?
I think the best advice I can give someone who wants to start a business is to just start. Our brains like to make it seem like we can’t start a business until we know how to do it all and what steps to take. Like, oh I probably need to buy a website and then I need to learn how to market online and then I have to figure out how to meet people and print business cards and what about a logo and on and on and on. We could spin in indecision and wanting to know all the steps forever if we allowed our brains to. So my best advice is to take one step. You know one thing you need to do, so do that. You don’t have to know all the steps to take when starting a business in order to get started. You just need to know one and take that step. You’ll figure out the next step as you go. Be willing to take the first step. I think that’s the hardest one for many people.
6. What are some of your 2020 goals? How do you plan to achieve your them?
My goals for 2020 are exciting! Like I said, I plan on helping at least 100 women this year transform their relationship with themselves and with their money mindset. I know from my clients and from my own experience that too often women put themselves last. We serve and give to everyone around us leaving us feeling empty and lost and sometimes resentful. I want women to know how to have a beautiful loving relationship with themselves first so they can then give and serve to those around them. I plan to continue to get the word out about my coaching through word of mouth, FB ads, networking and holding my own workshops.
I also have set a goal to speak at 12 live events or trainings. Being able to teach on confidence and/or thinking about money in a different more abundant way is where I thrive. I’ve already held one confidence training this year so I feel like I’m off to a great start. I love to train employees, teams and groups on confidence and money mindset and I plan to reach out to more businesses this year to make that happen.
